odds and ends

Well it's been awhile since I wrote in here. Things have been crazy busy for me and I never seem to find the time lately to do little things like write in here, or take pics and put them on the computer or even look at my birthday stuff! I hate being this busy because I can't function well and then other things start to slide and I feel like things are spinning out of control.

I had a good birthday last weekend. Mom and Laine came over and we definitely did some shopping....Metrotown, IKEA and the shops on Main. I liked IKEA and the shops on Main the best. Mom bought herself a new duvet and cover and sheets with the gift certificate that Ahlaina and Scott and I gave her which is exciting because it will go well with her new bed! I am so excited to see it....I bet it looks so nice in her room! Laine and I bought some stuff too. On Sunday (my actual birthday) we went for brunch with Cas and Allyson and Danielle at a place called Slickety Jim's. The food was good and cheap...it appeared to be quite a popular place because there were continual lineups to get in. After Danielle and Mom and Laine and I did some of the shops on Main and then I took mom to the bus depot and (later) Laine to the ferry terminal.

It was a good birthday. I wasn't into to doing tons of shopping that day but I found some nice stuff and it was neat that Danielle came with us. It's weird because I don't really know her that well. I mean I know her but it seems like when she and I talk it is about surficial things. I don't mean this in a bad way....this is just how our cousin relationship is. I guess what I mean is that I don't feel like we are close. I don't feel like that with any one my cousins really....no so much anymore anyways. I kind of envy Laine that way...she is close many of them. Oh well, "some do and some don't"....as Eman would say!

So mom bought me a juicer for my birthday and a vegetarian cookbook. I love them! Laine bought me a really good book on juicings so what do you think that I have been doing the past couple of days? You're right! I've been experimenting with juices! My juicer, I discovered, came with a container for the juice to flow into which was a plesant surprise as I opened the box. So far I've tried making 4 different types of juices. I made one earlier this morning with carrots, ginger, apple and beets (it had ZING!) and then tonight I made one with garlic, celery, tomatoes, purple cabbage and broccoli. This one was ok...it had zing too, but in a different way. It kind of tasted like V8. I think that next time I'll put carrots in instead of tomatoes and green pepper instead of the cabbage. Anyways, I LOVE these gifts and am having fun with them. I'm not sure what to do with the pulp yet (I've just been chucking it) but maybe it can go into a veggie lasagna if I ever get around to making one. Any suggestions anyone?

Today was a real "chore" day for me. I had so many things that I wanted to get done and I feel happy because I did get alot of them accomplished...i.e. screws for my shelf, garbage and recycling out, bathroom cleaning, vaccumed rugs, recycled bottles and plastic bags, dyed my skirt. I try not to make a whole bunch of daily goals for myself each day because I usually don't get them all accomplished and then it stresses me out, but today it was ok. I feel glad I got some of these things done. It sounds so grown up and adult-ish but this is the life of a single, thirty-one year old.

So Laura and I have discovered that our apartment is not smoke-free.....we both assumed that it was...aren't all buildings smoke free these days? But no, out hall reeks like smoke and so does the downstairs lobby. Gross. My concern is the secondhand smoke that Laura and I are breathing in...yuck....it makes my throat sore. We don't smell it in our apartment thankfully but the other places......ewwww....I'm going to look into it.

Archie is sitting beside me on Laura's blanket. He is so cute and fluffy and friendly. I love cats. They are the best pets ever.

I had so much fun thank you!!!!! I'm really glad that you are enjoying your juicer and the book. Juicing releases so many healthful enzymes from produce that normally get trapped in the fiber and aren't then released into your bloodstream. If you just google juicing recipes you might find ideas for the leftover pulp. I've added sweet pulps from fruit juices to my yogurt and Scott & I have made veggie burgers by adding spices, oats, and eggs (maybe beans too, I can't remember) from veggie pulp. I read online that you can add it to muffins..... so many ideas! I really do hate to waste it, especially since we don't have a compost but sometimes I throw it out( Gah, I admit!).

Ooh, yeah. I tried beets in mine recently too because they are so high in antioxidants (look how intensely purple they are) after never liking them in my entire life. I have to say I still really don't like them but at least I tried! AND, they made my pee kind of purple!!!

Ok, one more comment- if you find out anything about the smoking in your building let me know. A few people in ours continue to smoke inside and the smoke comes into our apartment. We've complained to our landlord and so have others and notices have been put up but it's still happening. I'm getting really sick of it and worry about the health effects of all the gross second-hand smoke that we're breathing in! I think it's pretty selfish to make other people suffer for your gross habit!

Whoa comments! I'm glad you had fun and found nice things for yourself. Thanks for the juicing tips....I'll check out the internet about what to do with the pulp....right now I throw it out too (eek!) but I guess that it IS biodegradable right?

I've been trying beets more but I find that they don't really grind too well so I think that I'll stick to the beet greens instead if I use them again. I didn't notice if I had purple pee after I ahd eaten them.

Don't know much more about the smoking in the building but I'm going to look into it. We haven't complained to our landlords because we don't know if it is a non-smoking building or not...it sure is gross and disgusting though....sometimes it reeks so bad and ya...all that second hand smoke. It IS selfish to be smoking inside and making other people suffer. I"ll let you know if I find out anyything....can't your landlord evict the people who are smoking? Wouldn't he be able to tell by investigating the apartments?
